Santa Claus, did it really existed?
Thu, Dec 6 2006
Santa Claus is a variation of a Dutch folk tale based on the historical figure Saint Nicholas, a bishop from Myra in Asia Minor who used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering.
As the story goes, the Bishop Nicholas rose to sainthood after stealthily delivering a gift of gold to three destitute girls through a window one mid-winter night.
His charity became legend when a man lost his fortune and found himself incapable of supporting his three daughters, who would not be able to find husbands as they lacked dowries. This man was going to give them over to a life of prostitution; however, St Nicholas provided them with gold and cookies, enabling them to retain their virginal virtues and marry.
St Nicholas is also known as "Sinterklaas" in Danish culture. He has a long white beard, wears a red bishop's dress, including a red mitre, and holds a long gold colored staff with a fancy curled top in his hand (a crosier). He rides a white horse with grey spots, or a 'Schimmel' (i.e. fungus - because of the color), called Amerigo over the rooftops. Sinterklaas carries a big book with all the children's names in it, which states whether they have been good or naughty in the past year.
Sinterklaas traditionally arrives each year in November by steamboat from Spain and is then paraded through the streets, welcomed by cheering and singing children. His throw candy and small, round ginger bread-like cookies into the crowd. The children welcome him by singing traditional Sinterklaas songs. Traditionally Saint Nicholas brings his gifts at night. He puts presents in the children’s socks in the form of candy with the first letter of the child's name made out of chocolate.
There are many variations from different times and places of the history and myths about Santa Claus and most of them are referring to St Nicholas. Therefore, Yes, Santa Clous existed in a manner, surely he was not riding sledge with his flying deers but at least he was an inspiration of charity, goodness and peoples fantasies.
