How to Drift a Car - Part I
Wed, Feb 27 2007
With the popularity of movies like Fast and the Furious, Tokyo Drift and Games like Need for Speed Underground, a lot of car enthusiasts are amazed with the drifting techniques.
Drifting has evolved into a competitive sport where drivers compete in rear-wheel drive cars to keep their cars sideways as long as possible. The drivers are able to keep their cars sliding for extended periods of time, often through several turns.
Prepare your car for drifting
Don't rush. For every successful drifting first you must tune-up your care properly. The first things that you need to do when going for a drift is an extra powerful car. It should have the following minimum requirements:
- » Rear wheel drive
- » 300hp minimum horsepower
- » Strong and good working tires
- » Powerful suspension
You also need a few essential parts on your car to make it drift like in the movies. Most important is an LSD. Nooo, it's not what you mean at the first moment. It means "Limited Slip Diff". This allows you to spin both rear tires at the same time, making it easier to drift. Other necessary parts include a bucket seat. Also Coil over or lowered suspension is a must have to lower the centre of gravity and stiffen the suspension of your car.
The key to successful drifting is good acceleration. To get you started, accelerate and shift to your 2nd gear. This would allow for several speed varieties. It could also harness your car engine's torque but would not distress its mechanism. Once you get accelerated and heated up, push the clutch and rev.
That would be all for now and if all this is done, then you are ready to start learning the drifting techniques.

300hp minimum???? that's a lot of power. you definitely don't need that much to drift unless the car is heavy.a stock version of the hachi roku in the pic can be drifted...

true, first of all it depends on the ratio of power an weight and secondly everybody who tells that you need a rear wheel drive car is an idiot...every rallye car is 4 wheel drive and these guys are really drifting. And in fact there are simple ways to drift a front wheel car as well... but I think this is an US-website, so no wonder. your cars have got a lot of power with max. motor volume, with maximum weight and with very low speed, compared with cool european or asian cars...which are going 150 mph with an 1,6 litre machine. come on get an old honda crx and start drifting...nobody needs rear wheel drive or 300 hp...cheers herm from germany

Anyone can drift. But to make the job easier and fun it depends on whats underneath you. Lightness and controllability is what you need from a good turbo car such as a 180sx. Good JDM parts from brands such as K-Office and Uras will sort you out with Coilovers, contol arms, pineapples, and castor rods. Oh and from my experience grip is the most important aspect. Fuck up with the shit CRX's people because there junk go Silvia's

Florida Drifter says:
I love how much trash people talk, for one, your not drifting a civic, your causing the back end to be powerd over, if your pulling the E brake, thats not drifting, drifting is the angle and smoke that is made from the back tires, ever see a drifting competition?
Thats how they are judged, FF dont drift, you slide around, its not drifting at all. And if you have an AWD car, its because your front wheels act like they have posi, which when you try to drift, your front tires pull you foreward so you cannot drift, honestly, do your research before you run your mouth, 300 hp, HA its not a matter of h.p its a matter of power to weight ratio, thats why corollas do amazing drifts, they weigh nothing for the power they create, so how about next time your going to post something, you experience it, oh and by the way, on newer cars your going to have tcs which sence when your rear tires are slipping and they govern your motor.

DriftUtah.com says:
Wow... the majority of you guy's don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Including whoever wrote the damn "article." Minimum requirements... 300 hp? Yeah if you're trying to drift a brick. If you need at least 300 hp, then explain why the most common drifters are cars like the AE86 Corolla, the S13, 14, and 15s, RX-7s, hell, even my MK3 Supra doesn't have 300hp and I can personally say that it works amazingly and it's completely stock. Horsepower itself doesn't make a car drift. Power to weight ratio does. As for strong and good working tires? I practice with crappy rubber that anyone can get for __0-15 a tire at your nearest salvage yard. It works just fine. And the moron(s) that "drifted a civic," or any other FWD car, I've got news for you. You didn't. That technique is called "power-sliding." Point being is don't pretend to know what you're talking about if you don't do it. And don't make it sound like it's a walk in the park. Otherwise there are a bunch of stupid fucking retards reading this that are going to kill themselves and/or others by trying it.

martie says:
ok people. there are i suppose "different types of drifting." There is the "proper" drifting and the "skid" drifting. they are completeley yhe opposite. the proper drifting is done with a rear wheel drive car (high power is better) and once the handbrake (e-brake) is pulled, the rear wheels lock up whilst the front wheels remain steering. when the accelerator is floored and the cluthch released, alot of power surge to the rear wheels of the car, causing the locked wheels to spin very fast, (kind of like a burnout, except at a higher speed). this is proper drifting. the other kind of drifting is just a skid. once the handbrake is pulled the rear wheels lock up. when you plant the accelerator, the front wheels are powered, but do not spin, unless you are in a VERY powerful car, which they may spin. but the rear wheels are skidding and the front ones are still going, and turning. try this. im right. the car will gradually slow down unless yu have a shite handbrake or a very powerful fwd car. if you people do NOT believe me, try it for yourselves. i ave had a lot of experience with all kinds of driving, including burnouts, speeding / racing, drifting and skidding. and skidding is a hell of a lot different to drifting. the wheels lock, not spin. ok i hope this settles you all!!!

i must agree, the 300bhp is a bit excessive. if you turn the esp off on a smart car they drift aswell, and there only 61bhp. Fair enough it wouldnt slide in the dry, but they drift quite well in the wet. You've just gotta catch it right, because the car is so short it will swap ends very quickly, but if you're ready for it have fun. You see some amazed faces when they see someone drifting a smart!!!!!!
