Skype founders are launching net TV
Thu, Jan 17 2007
Skype founders are in the process of launching a secure P2P streaming technology that allows content owners to bring TV-quality video and ease of use to a TV-sized audience mixed with all the wonders of the Internet. They describe the service as the world's first broadcast quality internet TV service which will replicate the complete television experience. It basically designed to enable broadcasters to get their programmes in front of a global internet audience and allow viewers to access all kinds of television over the internet.
The service will be ad-supported, but ads will be briefer and less frequent than on regular television, like corporate underwriting on public radio. Viewers will have a broader selection of programs and will be able to watch whenever they want.
The aim is to give viewers, advertisers and content owners more choice, control and creativity than ever before. They pointed out that the service is not a file-sharing application or a video download service.
Skype chief executive - Frederik de Wahl, showing off the service in London, said the service would provide a different experience from other internet television ventures in that it would replicate the complete television experience, and allow for channel surfing.
The service is currently being trialled with thousands of people who have downloaded the software to try it out. Current content includes sports, documentaries and music, with the full launch taking place in the next few months. Currently the company is accepting applications for a limited number of people who want to try out the service, thus it is not set a date for an official product launch, but itâ's going to happen sooner rather than later.
No dough the battle to broadcast over the internet is hotting up.
