Imagining the 10th Dimension
Tue, Aug 27 2007
In string theory, physicists tell us that the subatomic particles that make up our universe are created within ten spatial dimensions (plus an eleventh dimension of "time") by the vibrations of exquisitely small "superstrings". The average person has barely gotten used to the idea of there being four dimensions: how can we possibly imagine the tenth?
The ultimate goal of string theory is not only to unify quantum mechanics with general relativity, but also to explain the spectrum of particles and forces observed in nature.
In this two videos we are going to explain exactly how the extra dimensions are "compactified" to make them unobservable in our four-dimensional world.
