A new Mozart is born
Fri, Dec 7 2006
Born in 1991 in New Haven, Connecticut, Jay Greenberg is an American composer who some say is the greatest musical genius to come along in 200 years. He wrote five symphonies by the time he was 13 years old.
Bluejay as he calls himself, composes primarily on his computer, utilizing a special music-notation program with which he can commit his ideas to paper and play his scores back on synthetic instruments. His most famous work is currently an Overture to 9-11, about the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. At the time of the attacks, he was living in Macedonia but has since returned to the United States.
The public first heard Greenberg’s story in a 60 Minutes interview in 2004, in which Samuel Zyman – who has taught literature and materials of music to Greenberg at the Juilliard School of Music – said that young composer’s potential puts him in the company of Mozart, Mendelssohn and Saint-Sans, music’s most illustrious young prodigies.
It's not that Jay has nothing more to learn. Rather, he learns so fast and has already mastered so much, that he simply doesn't fit into the established academic channels and structures of study at Juilliard or anywhere else, especially when one considers his age.
The first CD release under his distinctive new agreement with Sony Classical will include the premiere recordings of his Symphony No. 5 – with Josй Serebrier conducting the London Symphony Orchestra – and his Quintet for Strings, with the Juilliard String Quartet and cellist Darrett Adkins. You may want to check out his official site
